Why do you exist?
To answer this question, many thoughtful people look to religion or philosophy. Still, they struggle to find the answer and spend their lives wondering what their purpose is.
Here’s good news: The answer is on the very first page of the Bible.
In the beginning, the Bible says that God created us to express Him and to represent Him in His dominion over the Earth (Genesis 1:26). To accomplish this, God created us with a special part of our being called the human spirit.
Zechariah 12:1 says “Thus declares Jehovah, who stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundations of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him.”
The Word of God ranks our human spirit with the creation of the heavens and the earth, showing us how meaningful it is in God’s eyes. So, why is our human spirit so important? This God-created organ can contact God, who, according to John 4:24, is Spirit. It can receive God, who desires to regenerate us with his eternal life. And it can contain God so that God can live in us and be expressed through us. Thanks to our spirit, we can know and experience God!
But we have a problem. The first man Adam, who was created by God, chose to be independent from God. This produced tragic consequences that remain with us today. The Bible tells us that through Adam, the entire human race became fallen and sinful, even causing death to enter the world. Sin led to greed and deceit, strife and division, anger and war. Worst of all, sin separated us from God, and the purpose for which we were created—to express and represent God—became impossible. But God did not give up on us. Instead, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from the power of sin and death. He died on the cross for our sins, and in so doing, He opened the way for us to come back to God. 1 Corinthians 6:17 tells us that when we believe in Him, He enters our spirit, we are joined to Him as the life-giving Spirit, and we become one spirit with Him.
In John 15, the Lord Jesus said that He is the vine and we, His believers, are the branches. When we believe in the Lord, we are joined to Him and we become children of God and share in the life and nature of our Father, God. 1 John 3:1a says, “Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God, and we are.” By believing in Jesus Christ, the problem of sin is solved, our spirit is enlivened, and we can begin to know, experience, and express God!
But wait… there’s more.
Humans are social creatures; we are not made to live alone. 1 John 1:3 says, “That which we have seen and heard we report also to you, that you also may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.”
When we believe in Christ, we enter into a wonderful fellowship with Him and with others. This fellowship strengthens us and fulfills us, and through fellowship, we can understand why we exist, and how to live a life full of meaning and purpose.
There are no entry requirements for this fellowship. It is simply a matter of praying to receive Jesus Christ. If you want to find the meaning of your life, open your heart and pray this simple prayer:
“O Lord, I ask that You live in me. I want to have You in my life and to be filled with You!"
