The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the reelection of Donald Trump, and the fierce conflict in the Middle East have compelled Europe to reconsider its future. The world senses that it is on the edge of a precipice. Because of the increasing danger, a rebuilding of “Fortress Europe” is imminent. The real significance of this, however, lies with Biblical prophecy.
In the Gospel of Matthew, the disciples asked the Lord, “what will be the sign of Your coming and of the consummation of the age?” (Matt. 24:3). In reply, the Lord spoke of several matters including “wars and rumors of wars.” He also described an atmosphere of violence, immorality, and wickedness unlike anything seen since the days of Noah (Matt. 24:37).
The Lord also referred to increasing, even multiplied lawlessness (Matt. 24:12). The Apostle Paul, too, wrote of lawlessness that is “now operating ... And then the lawless one will be revealed” (2 Thes. 2:7-8). Hence, lawlessness will intensify during the end times. Surely there is an increasing sense of lawlessness, of disorder, in society today. This will only increase until the “lawless one” is made known. This man will be the Antichrist.
In the books of Daniel and Revelation, the Bible reveals that there will be a revival of the Roman Empire, which mainly consisted of large parts of Europe. Especially in light of recent events, Europe is on a path of greatly strengthening its influence. Such a revived Roman Empire will be the place in which the lawless one will emerge.
So the emergence of a strong, unified Europe (along with American withdrawal) coupled with the leadership of a powerful individual, capable of breaking boundaries and influencing people, will be critical factors at the end. The world is clearly headed in this direction.
Recently, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stated, “Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”
Meanwhile, the Middle East is a continual hotbed of “wars and rumors of wars”, the latest being increasing confrontation with Iran. Under the leadership of Antichrist, Europe will be a major factor in eventually bringing a temporary peace to this region, but it will not last. The age, as we know it, will come to an end.
Is there anything that offers hope? Yes, very much so. But the solution is not political. It is an article of Christian faith that the Lord Jesus will return to the earth a second time. This is revealed in Acts 1:11, which says: “This Jesus … will come in the same way as you beheld Him going into heaven”. Hebrews 9:28 says: Christ “will appear a second time to those who eagerly await Him.”
While no one knows the exact time of His coming, the time is not far off. May the reader be one of those who is preparing for the Lord’s coming. Now is the time.
John 1:14 says: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God, to those who believe into His name.”
We urge you to pray: “Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Grow in me and gain my heart for You. I give myself to You to be Your son. Lord, make me ready for Your return. Amen.”
